Report a cyber incident

Cyber crime is investigated by national police forces. EC3 coordinates the cross-border response, but every investigation starts with a local report — yours.

If money has been stolen, contact your bank first — using the number on the back of your card — before doing anything else. Speed matters for recovering funds.

If you are an individual

  • Secure your email account first, then your other accounts.
  • Contact your bank immediately if payments or card details are involved.
  • Report the crime through your national police online portal or local police station.
  • Keep evidence: screenshots, message headers, transaction records.

If you are an organisation

  • Activate your incident response plan and isolate affected systems.
  • Preserve logs and evidence before rebuilding anything.
  • Report to your national cyber security authority and national police.
  • Consider your GDPR obligations — personal data breaches may need to be reported to your data protection authority within 72 hours.
